Position Overview
Breaking News coverage is at the core of what we do at KTAR as well as covering top, local stories that affect our community. KTAR News is looking for its next great Breaking News Editor/Reporter. This role is a hybrid one with primary focus on breaking news with additional reporting responsibilities. Work under the direction of the News Director and in concert with the Director of Digital Content and Executive Producer to plan, execute and coordinate breaking news coverage and exhibiting good journalism in all facets of the job. As a reporter, write and report news on-air in a clear, concise and accurate manner on deadline. Enterprise news sources for orginal news content for air and for the website. Possess solid broadcast writing skill, and become an asset to the news team through daily contributions of fresh, relevant news stories. Qualified candidates are required to submit writing samples along with the on-line application. During the interview process, candidates will be required to complete a writing skills test.
Note: Work configurations are subject to change based on business needs and at company discretion.
This position is an onsite role that requires the employee to regularly work at our Phoenix site.
What You Will Do:
Primary job duties will include, but are not limited to:
Prioritize and oversee breaking news execution on-air and in coordination with talk and digital departments.
Shape and refine stories that fit the KTAR News standard, giving breaking, local news/news of the moment the utmost priority.
Ensure stories and news content by reporters and editors are in line with the tone of the station and immediate news needs.
Efficiently communicate with others, build trust and relationships and have honest conversations with everyone in the newsroom (editors, reporters, producers, anchors and hosts).
As a reporter, focus on breaking news, with urgency and purpose.
Provide hosts with timely information, background and suggestions during breaking and non-breaking news situations.
Integrate/communicate on-air breaking news stories to web staff for production on ktar.com.
Contribute to the creation of video and audio assets for the KTAR brand on the website and on social media.
Develop and maintain news sources.
Consistently contributes story ideas.
Stay updated on all news, read local news sites, follow key social media sources and track TV news.
Remain in constant communication with AM and PM news desk editors to be aware of current local stories.
Create synergy with other Bonneville sister stations in development and sharing of breaking news content.
Oversee operations of the command center, train and support editor staff.
Skills and Experience We Are Looking For:
College degree in communications, journalism or related field or equivalent experience
Minimum of two years of experience in a professional broadcast journalism environment
Possess solid News judgement
Passion for news and current affairs
Aggressive attitude with a strong desire to advance in the broadcast media. A news junkie.
Strong desire to work at the state’s largest and most respected news radio station
Spends time researching topics
Multi-tasking pro. Ability to be organized with the capability to concentrate on more than one event at a time, able to follow written and verbal instructions under moderate supervision.
Willing to be active in the community
Knowledge of newswire services and a working knowledge of computer skills.
Working knowledge of KTAR News computer systems including the NewsBoss automation system.
Quick learner who is fully committed to meeting the challenge
Ability to dig up stories, enterprise news a must.
Excellent digital audio editing skills.
Social Media presence and proficiency in Twitter, Facebook and Instagram platforms.
Ability to be precise and accurate both in writing and production
Must possess driver’s license and clean driving record
Preferred Qualifications, but Not Required:
Experience using the NewsBoss automation system
Bilingual in English and Spanish
Physical Demands
Receive, process, and maintain information through oral and/or written communication effectively.
Manual dexterity and fine motor skills to operate computer keys and general office equipment. Ability to work on a computer for prolonged periods of time.
Sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.
Lift, move, and carry up to 20 pounds on occasion.
Compensation
$16 to $25/Hour. This range is inclusive of multiple job levels.
Hourly rate to be determined by multiple factors including but not limited to evaluation of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant along with internal equity and alignment with market data.
